Restaurant Review: Big Moe's Diner, London

I had been craving for some appetizing, 50's-American styled food since quite some time. Last weekend while on our way back home from Oxford, we hence decided to stop for a bite at Big Moe's Diner. They currently operate two branches in London (Aldgate & Newham) and for all you foodies in Pakistan, they recently opened an outlet at the Emporium in the city of Lahore. Londoners good news for you as well - speaking to the lovely Paige, I was informed of plans to add another 2 more branches around popular spots in the capital.

As you may now know, I always travel by car and so need a nice parking spot - which can actually be a herculean task in London especially during the peak hours. It did take around 10 minutes to roam around to find parking as most of the street parking spots are dedicated for business permit parking holders. So no chance to get one on the streets during the business hours.

After some good driving around we were finally able to spot Plumbers Row (E1) London Borough of Tower Hamlets where parking is free 5:30 pm onward on weekdays and free all day on Saturday and Sunday. The good part - it took hardly 2 mins for us to walk to Big Moe's Diner. First impressions? Well, a truly welcoming bold decor done in the hues of black and red and the first thing that caught my eye at the entrance was their ice cream bar which is definitely sure to get your taste buds dance in joy.

After a warm greeting by a staff member we were guided towards our car! A classic red chevy - with those springy seats and a table in the center - the joy on BabyN's face; priceless. While BabyN' settled down with some crayons and activity sheets, the lovely Paige showed around the restaurant allowing me to discover how family friendly Big Moe's actually is. Ample seating for small groups and couples, with an additional private room for events that seats up to 50 people and is totally popular for birthday parties. Having an opportunity to visit their downstairs kitchen, I was satisfied as well as fascinated to see high levels of operational quality reflected in absolutely clean and shiny counters and a professional bunch of busy staff.

Joining the family in the red Chevy, we decided the food we wanted to order and ended up with BBQ chicken strips, BBQ chicken wings (the two most popular starters of Big Moe's, both £4.45 each) and Jalepeno Bombers (£3.95) because I really wanted to try those. The BBQ starters tasted great, the sauce wasn't too strong and absolutely on point while the bombers, I was thinking would be fiery but was easily able to have them. The freshly prepared strawberry lemonade and mint lemonade (£3.45), were really refreshing and the Ferraro Rocher milkshake (£3.95) was really amazing with a perfect consistency, just as I like but it's a bit heavy so I wasn't able to make any room for the dessert in the end.

For the mains, husband had a Rib eye steak (£16.95) with fiery BBQ sauce and he opted for coleslaw and cheesy chips as his sides. The steak was cooked up to his preference and the sauce complimented it well. For me, it was their Big Moe's Slider (£15.95) which actually have three different kind of mini burgers - Diner mite, Texan chicken strip and classic beef, served in brioche buns and served with hand cut chips. My favourite from the trio was their Diner mite (left one in the photo below), for sure!

They do have a variety of burgers on the menu with different variations. The serving was massive for both the mains, and we weren't able to finish it all, so decided to take it away. I'm extremely gutted that I forgot my beloved camera at home, so the images of the food I've posted here lack the quality of the photos that I aim for, but I'm hoping to visit Big Moe's Diner again in future and I'll make sure to take it along on my next time. All I have to say that NO mobile phone can ever do as much justice as a camera does!

Final thought about Big Moe's Diner is that the food is definitely value for money, served with hearty portions and excellent service.

  9. Incredibly rude staff... my so ordered an ice cream and we sat down at a table, not knowing you can’t order a cone and sit down. So instead of politely explaining the situation and suggesting we have a drink or something we don’t have to leave, the waitress very curtly told us ‘it’s not allowed so please leave’. Regularly come to this area but will give this place a big miss
