Those of you who regularly read my posts, know how fond BabyN' is of pool time and how he loves splashing his hands and feet in water. He is however, still little and needs to properly learn to swim on his own. To boost the motivation, we recently attended a Water Confidence Class at the Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre in Kent, where we were given some water confidence tips. Our mentor was the lovely, well-experienced Julie who shared some handy tips based on the results of the researches that have been conducted by Fusion Swim School

The Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre is quite massive and has their own car park, which is free for the visitors. There's a reception at the entrance where one can get the information required.

I took BabyN' to the changing room to get him dressed in his swimming attire and to get him ready for the pool. I was glad to know about the facilities available inside the changing room, that included the lockers, showers, plastic bags and hair dryers However, it's advisable to to take your own towels, shampoo or anything else you may need.

The Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre team shared some amazing tips based on their research, after which I went inside the pool with BabyN' and we started off with a short nursery rhyme 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' while I made him do actions. The idea was to make him familiar to water for the tasks we were to do next. Next, we used water in the pool and buckets for a short play time in the pool, which was done to get the child accustomed to the water in the pool. Next, he swam like a crocodile, passed through the rainbow and did some other engaging activities because of which he wasn't quite happy to come out of the pool. However, the time passed quickly and it was time for the next group to start their class so I had to get him out of it. If you want to know about the swimming aids BabyN' uses, you can check out, here.

Research reveals that two-third of children unable to swim either blame it on embarrassment or discomfort. 56% parents said their children find the physical experiences surrounding swimming such as chlorine in their eyes stressful,  24% blamed embarrassment issues, such as body confidence and peer pressure (even amongst 4-6 year olds) while 18% said their children were just too tired from schoolwork.

We both enjoyed the class a lot, and I really found the tips and ideas useful for boosting BabyN's water confidence. Tunbrdige Wells Sports Centre also has a cafe where both hot and cold drinks and snacks are served. Besides, there's also a gym and designated areas for several other activities. Fusion Lifestyle, a registered charity established in 2000 runs more than 80 pools all over the UK, and this also includes the Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre where the dedicated 'Swim School' also offers lessons approved by the ASA, to make the children gain more confidence while they swim. Their mission is to make sport and leisure facilities affordable and accessible to all.

  4. When my daughter also got drowned one time she's swimming with her cousins, she developed a trauma. She became afraid of swimming pools :( How I wish my daughter can go to swimming classes and can enjoy the water again

  5. Wow, I think it was a super fun and a perfect bonding time. I have been very keen on getting by to be 3 year old learn swimming lessons, but here in India, they ask for minimum age of 4years! I'll have to wait!

  6. My mom had me do one of these classes when I was younger! Admittedly I hated it because I hated water but I can swim fine now so maybe it worked haha.

  9. My kids love the water. I think it brings back those memories when they were still in my womb, swimming in amniotic fluid. Haha. Anyway, all three of my kids took basic swimming and survival classes when they were still toddlers. I am happy I did because now they are really strong swimmers and confident in any water sport.

  16. Woooow. Mashallah teaching children activities at a young age is always wonderful. They can easily conquer potential fears at an early age. I think what you're doing is great.
