How to Raise a Compassionate Child

Compassion is important because it enables us to build profound connections with others and pushes is to address the struggles and inequality that other people suffer with. Due to its ability to drive meaningful interactions, compassion can actually improve health and wellbeing. So, you may be wondering how you can ensure your child is compassionate? Here are some tips from a sixth form in Milton Keynes.

Consider Other Perspectives

Help your child to see things from another person’s point of view and encourage empathy. If they behave unfavourably towards someone, ask them how they think they might have made that other person feel and how they might feel if someone treated them that way.

You should also help them to understand body language and facial expressions so that they can learn to identify how another person might be feeling without explicitly saying it. If your child is able to see things from another person’s perspective, they might be kinder going forward.

Teach Healthy Conflict Resolution

An important part of being compassionate is dealing with conflict in a calm and calculated manner, rather than saying hurtful things to people that we’ll regret later on. With that said, try and teach your child how to handle conflict in a healthy way by being a good role model. Don’t let them see you arguing with other people and if they seem angry at someone, teach them how to manage this emotion using mindfulness techniques.

Practise Gratitude on a Regular Basis

If your child learns to look at the positives in life and expresses gratitude for how fortunate they are, even if its in relation to something small or seemingly insignificant, they are far more likely to be kind, generous and helpful to others. If they can see what other people do for them, like cooking them a meal or driving them around, they might be more inclined to return the favour in some way.
