Kent, more popularly known as the 'Garden of England' is an exciting place for nature and beach lovers and it's hidden gems never fail to surprise not just the tourists and new visitors, but the residents too. From the many coastlines and beaches all over the county, Herne Bay is a small coastal town with loads of activities for both adults and kids especially in summer.

Go on a shopping spree in the town center:

Besides the high street shops, the town center nowadays has many stalls, where you can shop various things such as fresh produce of fruits, clothes, ornaments, shoes or perhaps anything you may name. I really enjoy buy fresh fruits and if you buy them in bulk, you'll also tend to avail a good price.

See the Herne Bay Clock Tower & Take the Kid to the Seafront Play Area:

It's always pleasant to take a stroll along the sea front and admire the beauty of nature. During the walk on the Herne Bay sea front, you will also come across the clock tower, which isn't just the tallest in the UK but is also known as the first freestanding purpose-built clock tower in the world.

There's also a small outdoor play area onlooking the Herne Bay sea front with some slides and swings that your kids can enjoy for free while you may want to grab a meal from the Fish & Chips shop right opposite the road. Who would miss fish and chips when visiting the beach? However, if you're looking for more options, more specifically a Halal option then there's family run A la Turka too. You can read my thoughts on the restaurant, here. Although the one I tried was their Canterbury East Gate branch, but they serve the same menu in Herne Bay too.

Enjoy shopping at the Pier Retail Village & activities at the Pier:

Once you've explored the town centre, you can head towards the Herne Bay Pier where more fun-filled activities would be waiting for you! Heading from the play area, it won't be fair to miss the Herne Bay Pier which is bustling with activities. Kids can enjoy various rides such as the bouncy castle, helter skelter, merry go round and boat ride to name a few, while the adults can go on a shopping spree from the stalls at a small market setup at the Pier. At the Pier Retail Village, you can find lots of quirky and retro products and also a decent range of crafted silver jewelry, bags and ornaments for interior decorations.

There are also various food stalls, from where you can get hot chocolate donuts, slush, ice cream, enjoy a candy floss or a light snack. The adults can also make crochet designs or take a dip in the warm water at the beach.

Afternoon Tea at a local cafe:

Once you're done with all that, why not stop over at one of the themed tea rooms in town? We stopped over for some afternoon tea, and relished some delicious goodies.

The best part was it being a child friendly tea room with activities for kids to keep them busy while you sip on your tea. The kid's play area in the corner has a table with mushroom stools where kids can sit and enjoy reading books, colour drawing sheets, make puzzles or play with the toys available there.

I loved the idea of an outdoor sitting there, which you can always opt for, on a warm summer day. Moreover, they also had a small themed shop from where you can buy presents or souvenirs for yourself.

Get closer to the animals at the Wildwood Woodland Park:

Approximately 3.5 miles from the Herne Bay Pier is the Wildwood, a woodland discovery park home to more than 200 animals including mammals, birds and reptiles, making it a perfect place for kids to spend some time. It also has a woodland play area and the children can experience close encounters with the animals there. The admission tickets are really reasonable, and children under 3 go free!
