Top Tips for Supporting Your Child Through Exam Periods

The big E word is one which strikes fear into many a heart. Whether you’re a parent or a child, looming exams can cause very real anxiety and of course, this is never going to be good for your child’s results. One of the most important things to remember when discussing or preparing for exams, is not to place your child under any real pressure. Of course, it’s important that they do their best but their best won’t be possible if they are stressed, worried or anxious. This sixth form in Somerset believes, the wellbeing of a child comes above any amount of achievement.

When should I begin discussing exams with my child?

Right from the beginning of their educational journey. Let your child know that tests are not the same as exams but are designed to help your child learn how to prepare for exams as well as to cement their knowledge. Tell your child how the system works – there’s nothing worse than being in the dark, it makes children feel powerless. If they are aware of the 11 Plus well before it happens, or aware of entrance exams and GCSEs then they won’t be shocked when their peers discuss their preparations or opinions.

Starting to prepare

Before the examinations begin, make sure you talk to your child about their study-space. Is it comfortable? Do they feel like it’s a suitable area or could it be improved? Take their opinions seriously. If they feel you have done all you can to support them, they will feel more inclined to do well.

What if they are lagging?

If your child isn’t up to speed, it’s vital that you seek support from their teachers. Your child’s educators can provide you with learning support programmes which will underpin learning already done and fill in any gaps.

Taking it easy

It’s never a good idea to burn the candle at both ends. Make sure you educate your child on the importance of rest and nutrition. Effective learning can only take place when the mind and body are relaxed and hydrated.

Eating junk food is of course to be avoided, as is caffeine and energy drinks or sweets. Encourage walks or other exercise in between revision – accompany your child if they need encouragement.
