So we arrived in Switzerland through Basel Airport and already had plans to hire a car for the stay. It was a smooth sail to complete all the formalities and in no time we were brought to our car just outside the terminal. After settling in, the GPS was set to guide us to Best Western Plus Hotel Mirabeau and we were on our way on a cool sunny day. Although we hit a slight congestion due to the peak hour but the overall trip through the picturesque towns was a memorable one. Being our first trip to Switzerland, the serene views at dusk left me in awe. BabyN' was asleep throughout the ride, so I could easily put the feet up and thoroughly enjoy the landscape listening to some great music on the way.

A few hours later we were making our way in to Lausanne just around nightfall. Our parking had already been reserved in a private garage just across the hotel. Due to security reasons the automatic garage door can only be opened by a hotel’s staff member and so we used a temporary parking  while I transferred the luggage inside. Having received a warm welcome and completing the check-in formalities at the reception, I was soon joined by DaddyA' who managed to put the car away for the night in a secured and covered facility.

We were allocated a room on the higher floors that had an alluring view of the snow-capped Swiss peaks and River Geneva, beautiful at night but perfect to begin the day with. Our spacious non-smoking suite had a separate bedroom with an en-suite & a TV and a lounge area with another TV.  There were sofa chairs, a bed for BabyN', tea & coffee making facility and a mini bar with a price list. The coffee table had a welcome note in a fruit basket that was laid complete with the needed cutlery and china. On a side table, BabyN’ was quick to spot an attractive glass bowl with a mountain of sweets in colorful wrappers, enough to create the largest grin the little one could manage. This was the first ever time he had so many sweets in one go, as mummy was quite lenient that day.

Although the drive from Basel to Lausanne was beautiful and even more entertaining with DaddyA's playlist, I began to feel the effect of quite a long journey it had been so far from home to hotel. After unpacking just the essentials I freshened up quickly to settle down and catch a breath before moving on. Our room had a spacious wardrobe with hangers, bath robes and a safe - all of which were handy for us to organize our luggage. There were some additional shelves just opposite the bathroom which proved convenient to store our cabin cases and as well as have everthing close-at-hand.

At check-in we were provided a transport card by the hotel valid on buses, trams and trains within the city limits and could be used for the duration of our stay. Just outside the hotel is the Mirabeau bus station where guests can easily hop on a well connected transport system. We however decided to walk around and it hardly took time for us to reach the central train station where we decided to grab sandwiches from an international fast food restaurant franchise, after which we headed to another restaurant to get a Happy Meal for BabyN’. The country is a little heavy on the pocket especially compared to the prices back home because we had to pay CHF 7.5 for a fish burger, chips, fruit, drink and toy while we pay £2.75 for the same meal at our end, in the UK. After enjoying the double priced dinner, we had enough energy to still see around a little. Although this time we decided to take the bus. Strangely enough it was just the 2nd time BabyN’ was on a bus. I doubt he would remember his first trip, but that wasn't something worth anyway as mummy had to take him to the hospital while DaddyA' was out of UK.

It was amazing to see that the city was quite alive late in to the night. The centre seemed pretty busy even after 9:00 pm despite still being a late winter period. After a few short rides we decided to head back to the hotel and catch some z’s so we could be all fresh for the next few days in Switzerland.

Soon after we reached our suite, DaddyA' immediately cuddled up in the comfy bedding to catch some sleep while I decided to repose in the sitting area while BabyN' nibbled on some food he couldn't finish at the restaurant earlier.

Before getting to bed, a customary bath for BabyN' was easy to manage as the toiletries (shampoo, bath gel, soap and body lotion) that came with the room meant we didn't have to bother keeping extra stuff for the trip. Among others were a shoe polish and a shower cap,  both really useful during travels when mostly one is pushed for time. Above all, there was also a hair dryer in the room which is my most needed item.

The next day waking up to the beautiful view automatically charged me up to explore all avenues. After a quick freshening up session, I headed to the restaurant downstairs for breakfast as BabyN’ was asleep and husband had already pecked at his morning meal.

The buffet included both hot and cold items including scrambled eggs, rashers, vegetarian options, a cereal bar, variety of juices, fruits and yogurt while tea and coffee was served fresh on the table. My window table at the restaurant enabled me to get some sunlight while I devoured my first meal of the day. Having 20 years of experience, Chef Didier Sarrat is sure to galvanize the taste buds of the diners at the restaurant.

It's a must for me to have eggs for breakfast, so obviously the scrambled eggs were my first choice from the buffet and these were the best I've eaten so far. I really liked the creamy consistency with which these were prepared. Also enjoyed the vegetarian options that were available.

Soon after getting back to the room, and spending some time out in the balcony, all of us were ready to head out and explore more of Lausanne. Following is a list of things to do in and around this lovely city.

Things to do Lausanne:

A resort town on Lake Geneva, Montreux is located between the lakeside and hills and is popular for the Montruex Jazz Festival that takes place in July. On the first day, we visited Montruex and got to witness the mesmerizing Swiss Alps and Lake Geneva. Lined with beautiful colourful flowers and sculptures, the promenade is a great place to take a stroll. In the same area, the tourists can spend time at  Mini-golf de Montreux, a place for  the families to play mini golf. Tourists can also explore the Château de Chillon, a medieval island castle with 14th century murals and ramparts.

Tour de Sauvabelin or taking a tour of the Tower of Sauvabelin, a wooden tower in the Sauvabelin forest in Lausanne is yet another option for things to do in the city. The 35 meters high tower was built in 2003, and enables visitors to enjoy panoramic view of the city and the surroundings.

One can spend some time at the Lausanne Cathedral, or enjoy the music and food at the Sunday market. When we visited the market, there was a lot of hustle and bustle, the sun was out and everyone seemed to be having a lot of fun. There were lots of different stalls selling fresh flowers and fruits along with other items such as honey and olive oil.

Located in Ouchy, Lausanne also has Olympic Museum that displays both permanent and temporary exhibits relating to sports and Olympics that is sure to excite the fans. Ouchy is a popular lakeside resort and a port in the south of the city and there's an area just opposite the station where people can walk while admiring the lake and the view of the mountains, go for boating, leave the kids at the play area or enjoy a snack or an ice cream from the cafes. BabyN' was extremely excited to see the wooden kid's area and he spent at least a good one hour there.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lavaex Vineyard is great for enjoying the Lavaux Express. The tourist train crosses the slopes of the region and is an extraordinary way of discovering the landscapes of Lavaux, a terraced vineyard. Also, I’d advise you to buy souvenirs for yourself either from Lausanne or from Bern because the other cities sell the same thing for a much higher price.

We spent 3 nights in Lausanne at Hotel Best Western Mirabeau and the staff made our stay fabulous and memorable. I'm sure to book a stay at the hotel next time I need to stay somewhere in Lausanne.
