Windermere Lake Cruises at Lake District

‘There’s no such things as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.’ This quote said by Sir Ranulph Fiennes rightly fits the books of an individual who is truly passionate about traveling.

Located on the northwest coast of England in Cumbria, the Lake District also known as the Lakes or Lakeland is an extremely popular mountainous holiday destination for both locals and tourists. Since the county’s mountainous geography has also made the Lake District the wettest part of England, I was hoping for a ‘nice’ weather which in my dictionary is something not too cold neither warm but something that feels like 20 degree to be more precise.

The Lake District National Park, established in 1951 is popular for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), covers approximately 2,362 square kilometres and has been designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, pulling as much as 15.8 million visitors annually! Since the lakes are surrounded with mountains, one gets to see stunning panoramic views of the beautiful surroundings including the highest mountain peak in England Scafell Pike.

The best way to get mesmerized with the beauty of this popular holiday destination is to enjoy a cruise on Windermere Lake and to get stunned with the spectacular views from the largest lake of England in the heart of Lake District. The Windermere Lake Cruises offer cruises from 45 minutes to 3 hours or you can also opt for Freedom of the Lake ticket and spend the entire day around the lake with the option of unlimited cruise trips for 24 hours giving you the independence to explore Windermere at your leisure.

It’s entirely up to you to decide on where to begin the journey either from Bowness, Ambleside or Lakeside - the Windermere cruise not just promises magnificent mountain scenery, bays and wooded islands, but also adds a lot information to one's knowledge with the commentary which is also available in different languages other than English.

Although I’ve been on the cruises in different countries several times earlier as well, it was BabyN’s first experience but we all were really excited to board the cruise. We parked the car at the Lakeside and paid £4 for the day. The next step was to get the ticket from the ticket office and then we had to wait until the cruise arrived, which was however not very long as we had already checked the schedule of the cruise online and drove to Windermere accordingly. Near to the time, we just had to queue to get inside the cruise that had ample space for everyone to sit and enjoy the ride.

At the start of the trip, the weather was really good but as you know how unpredictable the British weather can be, I would advise carrying a coat or a jacket along especially if you’re planning to enjoy the entire cruise trip on the open deck. Otherwise, the Windermere Lake Cruises have got you covered because they also have a covered deck and that also has a small shop from where you can get your hot drinks such as coffee (£1.60), tea (£1.50), hot chocolate (£1.60) and snacks. Other items on the menu include ice creams (£1.60-£1.95 each),  beverages, food such as sandwiches (£2.90), cakes (£1.60), giant cookies (£0.95), biscuits, peanuts (£0.80) and crisps (£0.60) as well as the confectionery items including different chocolates and fruit pastilles for £0.80 each.  Moreover, the Windermere Lake Cruises also offers self drive and rowing boats, weddings and private charters as well as the option to park and sail.

It's good the have a small shop on board for food and drink as my little ones always need something when we can't get it lol.

  13. I love the Lake District, especially Windermere. I haven't been on one of the cruises though, it sounds an amazing way to see the Lakes and learn about them too. I love that it serves hot drinks, like you say with the unpredictable British weather you might definitely need a hot cup whilst you are sailing around.
