Top Tips for driving Safely in Winter

Although I strongly believe that driving safely throughout the year is highly important, I also believe that the drivers need to be extra cautious when driving in winters. That's because of the weather conditions that prevail especially after sunset as the visibility reduces and in conditions of high fog, it's almost impossible to see what's around us.

Winter driving needs more attention of the driver and so does the vehicle maintenance for motorists especially for those who travel for long distances. My family and I mostly travel on longer routes for fun and leisure which is enjoyable and we get to explore new areas than just going back to the areas in our home town again and again. Therefore, we are always extra careful when it comes to car safety and driving in winters.

In situations of fog, the fog lights are highly important so you should make sure that they're working properly in case they need to be turned on. I also suggest you drive slowly in such cases because even if you're careful, the other drivers on the road might not be as cautious as you which may result in collisions (hopefully not). I remember the last time I was traveling to Canterbury by car, we had to pass through areas with totally no construction and just fields due to which the visibility was extremely poor and there weren't any street lights too.

In conditions of snow and ice, instead of breaking suddenly, reduce your speed gradually and reduce your chances of skidding by driving slowly. You need to be extra cautious at bends and corners and avoid spin wheel by pulling away in second gear. In case you lose control, simply move your leg from the accelerator instead of panicking because that will make things worse.

In winters, it rains more than it does during summer so I would advise you to be careful by keeping double the gap between the vehicle ahead of you and use the wipers and headlights to facilitate the correct vision.

Besides all these precautions for driving safely in winters, it is also essential to keep your vehicle in good shape. Remember to check the tyres, windscreen, lights, battery, locks and seals regularly to ensure a smooth and pleasant drive but the most important thing is to get a car insurance. In some countries, the drivers don't consider it as an important thing but it really is. I would opt for the cheapest car insurance, and maybe get some add-ons if needed.

  7. I think that maintaining the car is the most important. If you don't have a husband or father or brother to check it for you then learn or go to the garage and have it done.

When we were younger, my sister didn't check on her car and the radiator blew up so we were stranded. Once when I first started driving, I didn't check on the fuel tank and it died and I was stuck on the road. lol it was a silly oversight. I can laugh about it now but at the time it was no laughing matter!

  15. Very important tips masha'Allah. I recently learnt how to make sure my tyres are at the correct pressure - an easy thing to do but as a girl who'd never done it before I felt a little clueless! Also, it isn't necessarily safety, but make sure you give yourself extra time in the mornings so that you can de-ice your windscreen! A nightmare if you're already in a hurry! :)
