How to Raise a Resilient Child

When things go pear-shaped, resilience is what keeps us going and can help you to accomplish your dreams. The motivation to get back up can be difficult to muster but can come from having the right mindset and support system. A boarding school in Reading has provided these tips on how to raise a resilient child.

It’s Okay to Ask for Help

Sometimes our obstacles are bigger than us and we need a helping hand to get back up which is perfectly okay. This is an important lesson to teach your child so that they are able to ask for help when they need it.

Failure Is A Part of Growth

Teaching your child that the road to success isn't always linear can help them to deal with failure better, appreciate the journey and take away key learnings. You can do this by reflecting on the silver linings in your life and encouraging them to do the same.

Another great way that you can do this is by introducing them to inspirational stories of those on the same or different journey to them. This might be an autobiography of an Olympic athlete or entrepreneur that sheds light on their struggles and setbacks.

The Power of Praise

Praise is a huge source of empowerment for children which can help to boost their self-belief. Do this by reminding them of how great they are with examples of things that they’ve achieved so that they know that you’re not just saying that as a parent.

Let Them Make Mistakes

Mistakes are key for learning and being harsh on your child when they make mistakes can deter them from trying altogether and result in pessimism. Instead, work with your child and be supportive to create a safe space for them to make mistakes and grow.
