The Benefits of School Uniform for Children

A source of pride and a symbol of belonging, school uniforms have a long history in the U.K. From the simplest to the elaborate, they are a way for children to mark themselves out as a student, to feel a sense of belonging and can raise self-esteem. Even the routine of going out to purchase a first school uniform is an exciting first step for many children and should be marked as a special occasion.

Why school uniform is important

Schools with uniforms already know how important they can be in providing a sense of equality within the school populace. There can be no prideful displays of expensive sportswear or fashionable fad clothing. Everyone is equal and everyone has the same. Students are not bullied for not having the ‘coolest’ or most expensive clothing. They also feel like they are part of a community, and this sense of belonging contributes to their overall emotional wellbeing as this independent school in Hertfordshire believes.

The practical aspects

Without a school uniform, parents are faced with the task of providing hardwearing, comfortable, and suitable clothing for daily wear. This task is made more onerous by the will of the child. Many children enjoy wearing fashionable or sometimes inappropriate clothing and having to manage this during term time isn’t fun! Rather than providing a different outfit for every day of the week, children only require a few shirts and pairs of trousers/skirts.

For children with siblings, uniforms can be passed down and worn again. This is a great thing if the unform is expensive. Particularly so with blazers and overcoats. Warm school jumpers, blazers and coats provide a great way to stay warm and since trousers and skirts are usually made of hardwearing material, they last longer than ordinary clothing too.

If you are worried about the cost of the uniform, you may be able to find uniform shops that allow you to spread the cost over a few months. There are also second-hand stores you can buy from to help you reduce the overall expenditure.
