Hotel Waldstatterhof in Lucerne

Hotel Waldstatterhof, a city hotel having a prime location for being in the center of Lucerne more specifically near the railway station and the convention center. Reputed to be a 3 star hotel in Lucerne, the accommodation is equally good for business or family travel. With a total of 96 rooms on offer ranging from single to the business suites, there's something for everyone! Built by Emil Vogt in 1898 in a Renaissance Revival style, Hotel Waldstatterhof in Lucerne features hard, dark red Vosgean sandstone and is now under renovation since 2004.

As we drove to Lucerne, the first thing to worry about was parking, but luckily the guests staying at Hotel Waldstatterhof can avail a special discount when using the railway station's car park. The deal is to park at the Bahnhof and every time you need to drive out, just get a new ticket from the hotel's reception. I might sound vague here, but you can always ask the hotel's reception for details and to explain more about it. Parking charge for a night is CHF 20 which needs to be settled with the the hotel at the time of check-out and that's when you'll be issued a new validated ticket to release the car.

Having parked, we were ready to walk a short distance to the hotel - literally opposite the station. It was good to spot a shoe cleaner at the entrance, which came in handy after our excursions earlier in the day. Heading to the reception, we got our room key and we were briefed with the other important information needed for our stay. The hotel has a lift available just next to the reception and which proved convenient with all the luggage we had since our room was on one of the higher floors. Our non-smoking Junior Suite (35 m2 approximately) was bright and spacious, and was equipped with everything we needed for the stay. The double bed had two single mattresses, and there was a cot for BabyN'.

The elegant parquet floor gave the suite a modern and stylish touch, and the amenities in our room included a tea and coffee making facility in addition to two bottles of bottled water. Just a useful tip here - the tap water in Switzerland is excellent quality and one can find plenty of public taps all over mostly labelled 'potable water' as well.

The pillow a la carte in the room has four options to choose from, including the sleeper and neck pillow, hypoallergenic and the natural hypoallergenic 100% latex pillow. I was quite happy with my pillow, so I didn't feel the need of requesting another one. However, the reception is attended round the clock, so at any time guests can request a pillow of their choice, ask for a travel adapter or any other request they may have. An interesting thing offered is the babysitting service which could be especially useful for families looking for it away from home. Our room also had a pair of ear plugs to use in case it gets noisy but we didn't feel the need for them. The cupboard had a safe for the valuables and an umbrella for those unpredictable times. The washroom had a shower cap, toiletries, a sewing kit and a nail filer.

At check in guests are requested to leave the room key at the reception every time they go out and so did we before heading out to explore the city. We decided not to drive around the centre at that busy hour and also since the hotel provided us transport passes for two adults valid on trams and buses within the city limits, it was best to get around that way. Children travel for free so we didn't need one for BabyN'. We found our bus stop pretty near the hotel. The transport system is excellent, with excellent coverage and a free on-board WiFi. Even across the city of Luzern there are hotspots that provide free WiFi which amazingly work quite well too.

Buffet breakfast at the restaurant is served from Monday to Friday from 6:30 am till 10:00 am while on Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays it's served until 11:00 am so you can enjoy an extra hour's sleep. Breakfast can also be arranged if guests need to depart early but there are extra charges for room service.

Hotel Waldstatterhof is a dog friendly hotel, and with some extra charges the guests can also bring their four-legged member of the family along. We had a great stay at Hotel Waldstatterhof in Lucerne. It has a prime location, a nearby parking facility and most of all close to the transport links to be used for traveling within the city or to the other cities.

  3. Mmm, I love a hotel buffet breakfast! I have never stayed in a hotel when you're required to leave the room key at the reception, but I suppose it does make sense!
